Just browsed thru the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine 14:2,
and gleaned the following factoids possibly of interest to Paleos
and those with schizophrenia or multiple sclerosis:
1) Taking extra EFAs in the form of flax(linseed) and evening
primrose oils may in fact be hazardous without supplemental
selenium. Simply, the selenium works with niacin to prevent
oxidation of the EFAs, and subsequent cellular damage.
Now this was studied in the context of treating schizophrenia,
and multiple sclerosis. No causation has been proven between
dietary deficiencies and these diseases, but even in healthy
individuals it would seem prudent to take a bit of selenium
(microgram-range) if you're chugging flax oil.
This may be off-topic to strict Paleos, but I've noticed a
lot of discussion of supplementation within the Paleo paradigm.
2) An hypothesis has been held forth about the role of latex
rubber in causing widespread allergies and immune & mental
disorders. Related plants are papaya and bananas, and a case
is made for the avoidance thereof. Widespread use of latex
in the West occurred only after the late 18th century, when
industrial chemistry had advanced to the point of stabilizing
latex and making it more acceptable to consumers.
So basically using or wearing latex is probably non-Paleo,
and eating papaya or bananas might be rethought as well.
Those eating flax under Paleo should consider that, unless
selenium is ingested as well, you could be screwing up your
fatty acid metabolism and causing tissue damage. At any rate
eating naturally niacin-rich foods is always a good idea.
