I urge you to call, e-mail or write your senator TODAY regarding the
Food Allergen Consumer Protection Act (S.2499). The act was introduced
May 9, 2002 by Senators Kennedy and Clinton. It is being considered for
approval by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and
Pensions. If you received the letter from FAAN last week, you have the
details. As of today, nothing had changed on FAAN's web site as far
progress or update from the letter sent.
I urge you to tell your personal story about food labeling and
epinephrine availability by emergency personnel. According to FAAN,
this bill may be up for vote as early as THIS WEEK.
The bill addresses the following issues:
--Mandatory improvements in food labeling to benefit food allergic
consumers.
--Requires manufacturers to list toll-free numbers on all packages.
--Enables the FDA to asses penalties against processor and plants in
violation of this act.
--Begins a study of epinephrine availability by emergency personnel.
--Expands data collection by the CDC on food allergies.
In addition to writing Senator Bond who sits on the committee in my
state, I also wrote to our other senator. If the bill moves quickly,
she needs to know in advance that her vote is necessary for our
children's health and safety!!
