Kelly,
I didn't catch the whole thread on how your son was
put on Tums, but I'm assuming that this is what the
doctor wants you to use as a calcium supplement.  (If
I'm wrong, just ignore me)  If I'm right, I would
suggest you talk to a dietician or nutritionist about
this.

The purpose of using antacids is to alter the stomachs
acidity by raising the pH.  If you regularly take
something that changes the acidity of your stomach,
I'd be concerned about long term effects.
