Well, here it is, the big summary of responses to my question, and the
result was kind of disappointing. I wrote:
I'm wondering if anyone on the list has had any success in
contacting a manufacturer or distributor of ports, amontillados, cream
sherries or other dessert sherries. I have heard that they might possibly
contain gluten since they may be fortified with substances other than
grapes. So far I have had no luck in finding phone numbers or addresses for
these companies.
Well, two persons told me they would be very interested in the results.
One person suggested I hunt around on the Web under "Napa Valley", since
there are probably producers of ports among the winemakers located there,
and maybe I could contact them through their Web sites. (Sounds like it
could work, but I haven't had time to do it yet).
Another person told me that she had determined that Kirschwasser (cherry
liqueur) by Hiram Walker is gluten-free. Their no. is (501)-646-6100. Nice
to know--but that's still not port or cream sherry!
Finally, Chuck Brandt told me to look on his site at:
http://www.brandtbeach.com/celiac/upc, where he has arranged information on
the gluten-free status of a number of products. I checked out "The Wine
Group", but they did not include the types of wines I'm interested in.
Oh, well--if I manage to find out anything more, I'll let you know.
