LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:
BUYER, BE AWARE OF "WORD-OF-MOUTH"

In the WALL STREET JOURNAL on January 1, 2000, there ran an article
entitled, "A New Creative Order: With the Internet, everybody can be an artist.
But is it art?" The article went on to bemoan the loss of a "gatekeeper" to filter
out what might be "art" for the rest of us. "Historically, this role of
gatekeeper/tastemaker has been assumed by a fairly conservative
establishment of critics, dealers, curators, collectors and the like, who take it
as their duty to resist change." (And who are, I might point out, extremely
reluctant to relinquish control--witness the continuing conglomeration of media
moguls who seek to control every snippet of information.)

I have a flash for the JOURNAL: those of us who read do not need--or
desire--a gatekeeper. I certainly do not feel that anyone else's criteria for
judging whether or not a book is worth my time is any better than my own. The
operative word in the phrase, "freedom of expression," is *freedom.*

I am convinced that readers are capable of choosing for ourselves what is
worth our time--without the imposition of anyone else's standards. Readers
are, after all, intelligent people who know what they like. Those who want more
of the same will continue to buy paper books or the e-books offered by the
traditional publishers. We who want *original* or *different* will seek out the
adventure to be had online. Whether or not it is *art*, what we seek is "a good
read." If we occasionally find a good story well told in less-than-polished
prose or even in lackluster garb, the main thing is that we have and can
exercise freedom of choice.

And the search--the freedom to choose--is part of the pleasure. Personally,
however, I will continue to look for signposts and shortcuts to the best of the
best. There is never enough time to read *everything.* If there is to be a gate-
keeper, it is the limited time we have to enjoy what is offered. Obviously,
even with freedom of choice, we must *choose.* Now, especially, with a whole
wide world to choose from, it behooves us to learn to choose wisely.

As pointed out in our last issue, reading book reviews is one tool to help us
choose. Wise readers also take advantage of "word-of-mouth" enthusiasm for
a book or an author. Long recognized as the most powerful publicity of all
even by traditional print publishers, word-of-mouth is nearly infallible as a
pointer to popular--if not artistic--works. You are standing in a library or a
bookstore trying to choose between two books. Your companion walks up and
says, "Oh, I read that! It's terrific!" Which of the two books will you take home?
That's word-of-mouth.

Of course, on the Internet, word-of-mouth is most often actually read. In
forums, discussion lists, chat rooms, newsletters--wherever readers
congregate, keep an open mind and "listen" for the recommendations of
others. Especially if you know them well enough to respect their opinions.

As an example, we have listed below "eBook Connections' Favorite Fiction
So Far." eBookConnections reviews a lot of e-books. When Jamie Engle
says these are the top-rated books for 1999, that's word-of-mouth you can
trust.

A QUESTION OF FIRE, by Karen McCullough
Hard Shell Word Factory, <http://www.hardshell.com>
"A QUESTION OF FIRE is well-crafted, well-written, well-done! Karen
McCullough has created a memorable heroine in Cathy Bennett. She's smart,
multi-faceted and interesting - someone you'll really enjoy getting to know.
And Peter Lowell is the perfect foil to balance her! From their battles over
red meat versus salad to their clash with brutal enemies wanting to destroy
them, these two forge a partnership you'll cheer for enthusiastically. This
book is a terrific read."

BEUDRY'S GHOST, by Carolan Ivey
Dreams Unlimited, <http://www.dreams-unlimited.com>
"In this first published book by author Carolan Ivey, I was completely
sucked in from page one. I read it in one sitting, unable to tear myself
away. And when it was over, I looked up with bleary eyes and wished with all
my heart there were more."

BLOODWIND, by Charlotte Boyett-Compo
Dark Star Publications, <http://www.darkstarpublications.com>
"This is a gritty, intricate futuristic tale, with exceptionally well-drawn
characters whose conflicts and fears are absolutely gut-wrenching.
Definitely a page-turner, and I was completely swept up into the world."

CAT TALES: CHASING BUTTERFLIES AND FINDING RAINBOWS,
Leta Nolan Childers, DiskUs Publishing, <http://www.diskuspublishing.com>
"My daughter is enchanted with the cats' view of the world, and marvels in
the differences and similarities. The clear sound effects and animation
capture her attention as well as the story."

DIVA, by Rebecca Vinyard
Petals of Life, <http://www.petalsoflife.com>
"Rebecca Vinyard's vivid writing breathes passion and life into two larger-
than-life characters. Humor and love shine through the story's twists and
turns."

FIXATION, NanC Anderson
Starlight Writer Publications, <http://www.starpublications.com>
"In FIXATION, you'll find a heroine who refuses to be controlled by outside
influences, a strong hero with his own secrets and a nasty villain with his
two henchmen intent on Jessica's destruction set against both a big-city
party life and the splendor of an isolated, working ranch."

IN THE WIND'S EYE, by Charlotte Boyett-Compo
DLSIJ Press, <http://www.dlsijpress.com>
"Set aside a whole day (because you won't want to put this one down) and
break out a box of tissues."

PARTNERS IN CRIME, by Diana Hart
Hard Shell Word Factory, <http://www.hardshell.com>
"The plot twists will keep you turning the page, and it sizzles with sexual
tension. You won't find a hunkier hero than Rafe Sanders! Good, fast-paced
read."

SPIDER SNATCH, by Bill Branon
Huntington Press, <http://www.huntingtonpress.com>
"SPIDER SNATCH is a tense, gritty novel that keeps you turning pages while
you wait for the other shoe to drop. Action-packed, involving, and edgy,
Branon stops just short of being gory and never lets the knuckle-tightening
tension drop. Branon carefully selects just the right words to paint the
picture, and frames them with the abrupt realities of action, emotion and
violence. SPIDER SNATCH is a gripping story that you won't forget when the
book is done."

TANGLED MEMORIES, by Jan Scarbrough
Starlight Writer Publications, <http://www.starpublications.com>
"It's a wonderful tale of romance and lost souls who find each again after
centuries apart. It has just the right amount of nasty villains and
white-knuckled suspense that you will want to read it straight through. I
did and loved every minute of it, cheering when the villain got his/her
comeuppance and Alex finally realizes he loves Mary more now than he did in
the 14th century. This is a story well worth the download!"

THE BINDING, by PhyllisAnn Welsh
Starlight Writer Publications, <http://www.starpublications.com>
"PhyllisAnn Welsh creates a mystical world encompassing all your senses.
When you look up from the screen, you'll be surprised to find you're not on
the Island surrounded by beautiful flora, tantalizing scents, and magical
people."

THE GUARDIAN, by Lee Boschen
Dreams Unlimited, http://www.dreams-unlimited.com
"Lee Boschen tells an incredible tale, complete with page-turning plot,
poignant romance, and well-developed characters. The many action scenes
are clearly written and easy to follow. THE GUARDIAN has a gripping rhythm;
you can't help getting pulled into the story and characters."

THE LAZARUS DROP, Paul Moomaw
The Fiction Works, <http://www.fictionworks.com>
"The Lazarus Drop is an exciting adventure, filled with twists, turns, and
action. The characters are well defined and solid; you feel you know each
one, and their actions don't disappoint you. Nathaniel Blue is a strong
hero; totally aware of his faults, and he seems to enjoy the havoc they
sometimes wreak - the more challenges the better."

THE LEGEND OF LEJUBE ROGUE, by P.F. White
New Concepts Publishing, <http://www.newconceptspublishing.com>
"The Legend of Lejube Rogue is haunting in its portrayal of Oregon and the
Old West, mesmerizing with its twists and turns. In a short 105 pages, P.F.
White develops strong, multi-dimensional characters; each one is burned into
my mind. The story and writing are of the highest caliber."

THE LAST ENEMY, by Pauline B. Jones
Hard Shell Word Factory, <http://www.hardshell.com>
"I very much enjoyed Ms. Jones' blend of romance, suspense, and comedy.
Her characters are very dimensional. The hit man still haunts me because of
the way his depth is revealed as the story unfolds. Action and comedy are
smoothly written, making it easy to watch it as a movie in your head. But,
don't count on intermissions, you'll want to read it straight through."

THE WAGES OF JUSTICE, by Kate Saundby
Crossroads Publishing, <http://www.crossroadspub.com>
"Author Kate Saundby weaves an incredible tale of intrigue and passion on
the Nublis planet. Blending customs and traditions that are both beautiful
and tragic in their consequences, Saundby creates a world that demands
decisions, actions and sacrifices only the strongest heroes and heroines can
deliver - and they certainly do! Be sure to order books two and three of the
trilogy - you won't want the story to end!"

UNFRIENDLY PERSUASION, by Diana Hart
Hard Shell Word Factory, <http://www.hardshell.com>
"If you're looking for a fast-paced story with fun, quirky characters, a
humorous mystery, and a good dose of romantic sizzle thrown in, you MUST
read Unfriendly Persuasion! I flew through it and didn't want to put it
down. Aunt Chelsea and her cronies are absolutely delightful. Hurry, hurry
over to Hard Shell Word Factory right now and order this book. It's a
keeper!"

WYOMING WILDE, by Diana Hart
Hard Shell Word Factory, <http://www.hardshell.com>
"You'll enjoy meeting these two fiercely independent adults and watching how
they deal with the problems life throws at them. Plus you get the bonus of
the breath-taking beauty of Wyoming painted in beautiful word pictures for
you!! Sit back with a cup of tea, put your feet up and sink into the romance
of WYOMING WILDE. You won't be disappointed."

E-BOOK NEWS:

BARNESANDNOBLE.COM AND MICROSOFT ANNOUNCE ALLIANCE
TO CREATE EBOOK SUPERSTORE

Barnesandnoble.com and Microsoft Corp. announced Thursday at the
Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that they will take a major step into
the digital content future with the creation of a barnesandnoble.com eBook
superstore using Microsoft® Reader software. The alliance will provide
barnesandnoble.com's millions of customers with access to thousands of
eBook titles through Microsoft Reader, a new software application designed
to deliver an on-screen computer reading experience rivaling that offered by
traditional paper-based text.

Barnesandnoble.com will create the eBook store on its Web site by
mid-2000. Barnes & Noble will also aggressively market the new eBook store
through a variety of promotional activities in its more than 1,000 retail
bookstores nationwide.

"The combination of barnesandnoble.com's online strength and Barnes &
Noble's dominant retail presence will make Microsoft Reader available to
tens of millions of book consumers in a matter of months," said Dick Brass,
vice president of technology development for Microsoft. He predicted the sale
of electronic books will reach $1 billion in 3 to 4 years, and could overtake the
sale of print books in a decade.

"We envision a time in the not-too-distant future when there will be electronic
versions of virtually every book in print," said Steve Riggio, vice chairman of
Barnes & Noble. "The technology of Microsoft Reader provides a superior
reading experience for existing content and, as important, will generate an
exciting wave of electronic publishing that will go far beyond books.
barnesandnoble.com plans to be at the center of what will surely be a huge
market for digital content of all types."

Microsoft Reader is the first product to include ClearType(tm) display
technology, a Microsoft innovation that reportedly improves font resolution on
LCD screens for users of desktop or laptop PCs running the Windows®
operating system. Microsoft says the Reader software also adheres to the
traditions and benefits of good typography. It offers a clean, uncluttered
display; ample margins; proper spacing, leading and kerning; and powerful
tools for book-marking, highlighting and annotation. Microsoft Reader includes
a built-in dictionary as well as a library that can store and manage a large
collection of books and other documents.

In addition, users can "turn" the page by tapping an icon on the screen, and
they can highlight text, make notes and bookmark sections of the book.
To accelerate the initiative, Microsoft Reader will be distributed free for use in
Windows-based devices. The eBooks formatted for Microsoft Reader can't
be read on other eBook platforms, such as NuvoMedia's Rocket eBook.

Microsoft Reader is expected to ship in the first half of 2000.

The barnesandnoble.com site will open new opportunities for the publishing
industry to sell books. For example, customers will be allowed to preview one
chapter of a book before they buy it, officials say. "I still find it exciting that
when people think this $28 billion book industry has run out of gas, here
comes another revolution," Barnes & Noble Vice Chairman Steve Riggio says.

According to PublishersWeekly.com, "the move strengthens Barnes &
Noble's foothold in the e-book market and gives Microsoft the necessary clout
to approach and win over publishers. In so doing, Microsoft may have
overcome the so-called chicken-and-egg problem of needing publishers to
attract consumers and consumers to attract publishers, and, as Brass has
said, 'go directly to the omelet.' It also represents the first shift in how e-books
are sold--from a scattered, and often weak, grouping of electronic
publishers each trying to sell books that use its own system to a more
centralized model that will allow for more titles in one place."

ALSO ANNOUNCED AT LAS VEGAS: MICROSOFT READER SOFTWARE
WILL INTEGRATE AUDIBLE'S AUDIO PLAYBACK CAPABILITIES

More than 20,000 hours of audio from www.audible.com will be available to
Microsoft Reader customers. Microsoft Reader will be a single application that
can be used to hear or read book titles in electronic form.

"Our work with Audible will bring a new dimension to the rich reading
experience possible with eBooks," said Dick Brass, vice president of
technology development at Microsoft. "With AudibleReady(TM) Microsoft
Reader, people will have the option to listen to books as easily as they can
read them."

With more than 20,000 hours of audio newspapers, magazines, books,
speeches, lectures, and language learning, audible.com offers a broad range
of digital audio available in one source. Microsoft is an investor in Audible.

THE BOOKNOOK ANNOUNCES E-BOOKS AMONG THE WINNERS OF
THE SECOND ANNUAL "LOVE THAT BOOK" AWARD FOR 1999

The BookNook <http://www.thebooknook.com> released the winners of the
1999 "Love That Book Award," a reader-voted award for the best romance
novels of 1999. Most of the winning books were from "paper" publishers.

However, "The most notable difference this year is the arrival of e-books in
the line up," says Lisa Hamilton, owner of The BookNook. "Last year we had
one electronic book reach the final cut and this year there are two, plus one
author who came in second for the best new find. It is obvious to me that the
popularity of ebooks is on the rise."

In the Regency category, an e-book, EDWINA PARKHURST, SPINSTER,
by Patricia White, Hard Shell Word Factory, won second place. (Patricia
was spotlighted in The RunningRiver Reader Vol. 1 No. 2; see the
issue online at <http://www.runningriver.com/readerarchives/vol1no2.htm>).

In the Paranormal and Time Travel category, another e-book won second
place: RETRIBUTION, by J.C. Wilder, Dreams Unlimited.

In the category of Best New Find of 1999, second place goes to e-author
Pauline B. Jones. (Pauline was spotlighted in The RunningRiver Reader
Vol. 1 No. 3; see the issue online at
<http://www.runningriver.com/readerarchives/vol1no3.htm>).

Hamilton says the awards are based upon reader input only. Readers were
encouraged to start sending in their votes in late September and by the end
of December, thousands of votes were received. "I am quite pleased with the
response I received this year," she says. "I will definitely have to automate the
process next year."

The BookNook receives more than 10,000 hits per month.
<http://www.electronicbookseller.com> is the e-book division.
