I would advise 800x600 with a 15" monitor, or if it doesn't bother you,
1024x768. As for color depth, 16 bit is normally the best compromise between
clarity and performance. All images will have photographic quality (65,535
shades of color) and will generally be clear and sharp. If there is no
detectable drop in speed, go for 24 bit color, just because.  ; )
