Any chance your using a video adapter with dual display
capability such as tv out ? I experienced the same symptom
on a laptop using a Trident 9750 w/tv out.
If this is the case you should be able to disable this
from Display Properties; accessed by right-clicking the desktop
and look for a related tab.
