Funny you should say that.  The library where I work
is raising silkworms for summer reading for the kids.
Each silkworm cocoon has 1/2 mile of silk thread and
it takes 5-6 strands to form the "thread" that clothes
are made from.  They eat like there is no tomorrow,
spin their cocoons, and if the silk is harvested, the
cocoons are baked (to kill the larva), then boiled to
unravel the thread.  If they are allowed to hatch,
they don't eat, mate, lay eggs and die (live for only
1 week).
