An article today about childhood ear infections entitled:
Now hear this: What to do about ear infections by Lisa Jaffe Hubbell
of The Seattle Times
is somewhat encouraging in that the article indicates a trend away
from reckless use of antibiotics and a trend to look at what really
might be the cause of ear infections. Even though doctors still tell
patients certain garbage, it is encouraging to finally see doctors
getting a clue! The reason I bring it up is a reference to breast
feeding:
"While bottle feeding is not considered a risk factor, Shifrin says
that breast-fed
children seem to have fewer ear infections. Dr. Steve Dassel, a
pediatrician at Sand
Point Virginia Mason Clinic, says researchers are unsure whether this
relates to the
more upright position of breast-feeding infants, or to some ability of
breast milk to
convey to babies immunity to the infections."
