  This sounds like the drive's partition table is corrupt.  It seems like
there ought to be tools that would let you edit that table, but I don't know
of any.
  Ypu *might* be able to get away with deleting both E: and I: partitions,
and then re-creating E: -- I'm afraid the alternative is, as you surmise, to
reformat the drive and try again.
