Terrence,
You must remove the old battery from the motherboard circuits. Most people
completely remove the old battery but you can just clip the leads ("wires")
for the battery. Also, check the MoBo to see if there is a special jumper
that needs to be moved for the external battery to work.
Ultimately, it may just be a bad motherboard that is draining the battery.
But look for loose screws shorting out the board before condemning it.
