I have installed a new port and all is well. I assume that I got a l;ittle
heavy handed when I installed the AGP card-it is in very close proximity to
LPT1 on on the board.

One of the lines in the printer cable carries the "out of paper" signal
back to the PC; similarly, this must appear on one of the leads in the
ribbon
cable from the connector on the back of the PC to the motherboard. A break,
short, or poor/intermittent contact on that line could yield false "out of
paper" signals.
Printer cables are cheap (I periodically see them as "loss leaders" for
$1.98), and over the years we've seen a bunch of really *weird* symptoms
cured by replacing the printer cable. So I'd try that....
