It is Error Correcting Ram. Parity will only detect single bit
errors and will not allow them to be corrected. ECC ram uses
several bits to form a code (syndrome) which can detect and/or
correct multiple bit errors (within limits). It is more expensive,
and generally used on mission critical systems where a bit error
can cost big bucks.
