Subject: milk alternatives, allergy testing of children

Hi -

I'm rolling two topics into one.

First for dairy alternatives: My husband and older son eat their cereal
in the morning with OJ poured on it. I've tried it myself. It's pretty good,
but don't even THINK of adding sugar!

Second for allergy testing: Our second son tested positive for food allergies
when we brought him in at 18 months (having noticed trouble). The allergist
recommended strict avoidance of the problem foods, and no re-testing until
he's at least 3 1/2. They like to wait until the kids are old enough to talk
and tell you about symptoms that you might not see. Like an itchy throat, which
can quickly escalate to anaphylaxis. If the kid can *tell* you, then you're in
much better shape! The only reason not to wait is that it's hard or impossible
to feed the child a healthy diet without the food(s) being avoided.

If you're still breastfeeding, by the way, keep it up! It's good nutrition
for children until about 4 years of age, and will let you maintain a healthier
diet for your child while you're stuck avoiding common foods. (I've heard it
can suffice as sole nutrition well past 12 months. So if you have food
allergies, do consider extended breastfeeding.)

Sorry about the mix of topics!
