I have never written to the group before, so this may seem wordy.
Three months ago, after being diagnosed for years with Irritable Bowel
Syndrome etc., my gastroentorologist finally decided I needed further
testing and I was diagnosed with Celiac's disease. I followed a
gluten-free diet for two months and seemed to be improving. Meanwhile,
my family doctor realized I had never seen an allergist and recommended
one he was seeing - a top specialist in his field and both he and his
nurse were amazed at the strong reaction to certain foods, namely wheat
- very strong; instantaneous, tomatoes, potatoes, shellfish, other types
of fish etc. I have since, for four weeks, been on an elimination
diet. This doctor believed that my allergy was to the bran in bread
products NOT gluten. He indicated that I could ingest white bread and
pasta as there is no bran content. I therefore tried eating a veggie
burger on a white bun while shopping with friends, but had an almost
instantaneous reaction. The allergist now tells me to avoid white
bread. I feel I am torn between two diagnoses and as a result can not
get a clear answer. The gluten-free diet seemed to help, but I am
definitely aware of the strong reaction I have to certain foods. Am I
celiac or not? My gastroentorologist stakes his reputation on it - all
the symptoms like irritable bowel, leg cramps which keep me awake,
constant diarrhea, vomiting are explained. Just wondered if anyone else
has similar symptoms.
