One obvious solution that escapes many people is to add another printer port.
The PC architecture supports 3 ports. You can get a cheap parallel interface
card for about $10, then you can have multiple printers/scanners etc without
needing switch boxes or anything.

Of course, if you have a more modern system with USB, then the USB scanners work
very nice. I recently put together two P-II 400Mhz systems for a local real
estate office, one has an Agfa USB scanner. Works like a charm.
