I don't see anything that says the author meant they did, in the first
statement.
I have gotten paper cuts on my lips licking envelopes, I don't have protruding
lips....I am rather impressed that
someone could cut meat in their mouths with something as large as
a machete and not ever miss and cut their lips, or noses, too. Nothing says
they have to
protrude...why would you have to defend that point? or even think about that
issue?
That would never have crossed my mind.
