This sounds suspiciously like the BIOS cannot see the mono card.
Does the printer port show up?
I recall that for a while I used a mono card with an old ATI
VGAWonder+. The VGA caused random garbage on the mono monitor, which
was fixed by (soft) configuring the VGA card to run as an 8-bit
instead of 16-bit card.
[I have not seen the problem on more recent VGA cards, and I do not
know of a PCI equivalent to the fix -- which would be a shame to
inflict on the Matrox.]
Double-check that the card is fully seated; try moving it to
another slot, or even another machine. Try to get some indication
that it still works....
