Walter and Susan, although you can do little about the child's spina bifida
at this point, I think there's no reason to make the mother feel guilty
because MAYBE her failure to be on a GF diet caused the child's condition.
However, I think you definitely need to make grandmother and mother aware
that celiac disease does NOT go away, even though the overt symptoms may.
Perhaps providing literature on the disease from an organization such as
CSA/USA, Inc. in Omaha would get the point across. In the event the mother
has other children, this is important not only to avoid birth defects, but
also to make them aware that future generations may have CD.
