This is a summary of the answers I received to various questions.
1. Should I have other family members tested for CD, especially those
with type 1?
The general consensus is that since CD is genetic and correlated with
diabetes to some degree that it is recommended that immediate family
members be screened periodically for celiac antibodies.
2. Must I be stringent on the gluten free diet? Since he shows no
symptoms what harm would small amounts of gluten be?
Gluten has a destructive effect to the small intestine, if it is not
completely eliminated, the intestine will become damaged and further
complications could arise.
3. I was told by several people that Rhett's blood sugars would be easier
to control. I asked whether there would be a greater need for insulin
once he was gf, this was confirmed.
