  This post will be coming late -- I already saw a few replies to
yours, but I feel the need to throw my opinion in.
  The recommended resolution for 15" monitors is 800x600. 640x480 is
too small anyway, and 1024x768 is straining the eyes at 15" and is
the resolution of choice for 17".
  The color depth boils down to two choices : High Color [64k colors,
16 bits per pixel] and True Color [24 bpp - 16m colors]. You should
test these two. If your machine works slow @True Color, step down.
Image quality of those is almost the same, and I frequently switch
from one to another for no particular reason :-/ and hardly notice
the difference.
  One more thing. If you can change the refresh rate, raise it as high
as you can -- limited by monitor & card specs. This is better for the
eyes. With the default of 60 Hz, I can see the screen flickering. When
I set the rate to 100 Hz it's a different story.
