To check the CD-ROM speed you might want to download a program called BCM
diagnostics for windows 95, that is if your son has windows 95.  If he
doesn't, you might want to go researching for programs that can do a system
information check on windows 3.1 operating systems.  This program also works
on windows 98, but there are other diagnostics programs available.
