The memory is of unknown type, other than 16 meg is in the form
of 72 pin SIMMs and one 16mb stick of 66 mhz DIMM.

If the manual is available, have you looked up the memory
configuration re: the motherboard's ability to utilize SIMMs and
DIMMs together? Few motherboards I have looked into permit this,
mostly, I suspect, because SDRAM DIMMs tend to be faster than
SIMMs.
