Ironically, your idea is, more or less possible.

In Eudora, the email client I use, you can set it up to display only the
subject lines on a list.  You can additionally, have the sorting function
set to keep like subject lines together.  This enables one to skim down the
list and tap that delete key as you go.  I in fact use this method to save
me time.

Another powerful function of most good email programs is filters.  I have
my filters set to watch for certain subject lines, or certain senders.
When the program sees that string go by, it can either be set to
automatically move the email to the trash bin, or sound a wav file through
your speakers, or what ever.  I use this one to catch the heavy traffic
from a list on computer sound and audio which I want to keep an eye on, but
rarely read in detail.  I use the wav file option to alert me immediately
when a particularly good "friend" of mine writes me a note.

You were being humorous, but I thought this was a good chance to make
listers aware of some options they might not have tried yet.  It is
powerful, and worth the time it takes to figure out to automatically sort
and filter mail from lists.
