Dear Listmembers ~
So many of you responded to my request for information on what might cause
bloody stools.

Most suggested hemorrhoids, either internal or external, caused by the change
to GF diet and not enough fiber ingested.

Cancer

Fissures from constipation could bleed. Polyps can cause bleeding when
straining.

Porphyria (rare) has 8 forms of this disease.

Parasites such as Shigela. And e.coli. Perhaps candida yeast dying off.

Intestinal problems such as colitis, ulcerative colitis, and diverticulitis.

Inflammation and the ensuing scarring could cause a narrowing which could
bleed while digesting.

Breathing chemical fumes caused hot flashes, sweats, bloody diarrhea and
nausea in one person.

DH

Milk products, infection from uncooked foods, and cheating on the GF diet.

Not absorbing Vitamin K.

Lack of fiber. Add flax meal, more vegetables and fruit. Drink at east 8
glasses of water a day.

Actually, our son eats plenty of fiber and has consumed more than 8 glasses
of water a day ~ probably because of the Sjogren's Syndrome ~ for the last
nine years. As I said in my original post, he never had 'typical' celiac
symptoms. But does have Sjogren's and Raynaud's syndromes, also fibromyalgia
(very tight and painful muscles and joint aches, chronic fatigue, and
depression). We discovered the CD only after my husband's cousin was finally
diagnosed (after years of "IBS") by Dr. J. Murray, then in Iowa City. When
Dr. Murray was told of our son's autoimmune problems, he suggested he had
celiac and should be tested. The blood tests were positive and the biopsy
showed full-blown celiac. How this could be, we don't know. Only AFTER
going gluten free did he develop pains in his digestive system. And now
severe pain and blood. (Almost 9 mths gf.) He never cheats on his diet and
if he has ingested any gluten it was unknowingly. His paternal grandmother
died a year and a half ago of intestinal cancer and had dermatomyositis. We
think she was an undiagnosed celiac.

After our son's diagnosis, his father was tested. Blood was positive, biopsy
negative. He has chosen to be gluten free. I took advantage of the blood
testing done here in Seattle for the Maryland Celiac Research this Spring.

Needless to say, we were shocked to have the blood work come back positive
for all three tests. I have a biopsy scheduled for Thursday. I had been
gluten free, also, since our son's diagnosis, and really didn't enjoy the
discomfort of eating gluten again (two mths prior to the testing). We
thought it could just be intolerance.

Today our son's GI MD told us blood is not normal in bowel movements. He
doesn't have external hemmorhoids. More hemoccult cards will be filled, and
a colonoscopy is scheduled. Presently there is no noticable blood on his
stools.

Thanks so much for caring. Your prayers would be appreciated.
