When I access my CD-ROM drive from a DOS prompt (outside of Win9x)
without having a disc inserted, I get the message "CDR101 Not Ready.
Abort, Retry, Fail?" I wonder if my CDR101 message is the same as your
CDR001 message? It seems possible that your hard drive is being
completely unrecognized by DOS, which would make your first valid drive
your CD-ROM drive. If so, I'd have a look with fdisk and make sure the
partition info is valid. Additional steps might be to run "fdisk /mbr"
to rewrite the master boot record, or run "sys c:" to (re)transfer the
hidden system files to the hard drive, and/or try to reformat the drive.
If it still has problems with "Invalid Media" then you may indeed have a
failing drive and should replace it. (Still under warranty, by chance?)
