If you mean a monitor that has swirls of color in it that shouldn't be
there, it needs to be degaussed, using a degaussing coil.  If you can't
borrow one (they cost about $60), I have had a tech buddy use a large power
drill and even a vacuum cleaner.  You start the drill or vacuum about 5 feet
away from the active monitor and move it slowly forward until it is very
close to the screen, hold for about 15 seconds and slowly move it away.  He
swears by it, and he's used it on numerous TV sets in a pinch, when he was
away from the shop.
