Wayne,

You said you are connecting another drive to the original. Did you remember
to check the jumpers: i.e. Master / Slave / Cable select?

I had a similar problem and it was because of the Cable select option.

Another good reason and similar situation I had was bad sectors on the MBR.
This one drive couldn't boot because of the bad sectors on the MBR and as
you know, even a format wouldn't  help.
