The memory check on startup is hardly the best way to test the memory.
It can, I think, only detect a serious problem. 'Finer' (?) problems
are not detected by this check but with specialized memory-testing
programs, usually included with any good universal tools package
(Norton, Nuts&Bolts, etc.)

The reason for it probably is that a good memory test takes 20 min. on
my 32 Mb (Celeron-450). No one would wait that long for machine to
boot!
