You mentioned checking the cabling, but how about the master/slave
jumpers, resetting the BIOS HDD section to "none" (or Auto) for
the port the CDRW is on?  I hope it would be that easy, (grin)...

Be careful about having a "bad disk" in ANY CD-ROM(type) drive.
There are various definitions of "bad" in this case.
A good disk in a drive that can't read it is a "bad" disk
under the "new rules" of compatibility...
"Logging" a (real) bad IDE disk will ALWAYS cause you grief...
Factory CDs are not always "perfect". (The percentage of
factory CDs you have trouble with should be VERY small, though...)
Think of these as slow hard drives when troubleshooting...

Have you removed stuff, and worked from "the ground up"?
