The other place to look for volume control which for what ever reason is not
controled by the Modem Properties in control panel, is: My Computer, Dial up
networking, and properties for your modem in your dialup account. I had to
work backwards from what you are doing, i.e. I wanted to disable the racket
and no amount of adjustment in control panel would do it. But in Dial up
networking that slider did the trick.
