I had a very similar situation occur with a JVC 2x4 CD writer last fall.
The symptoms were quite the same and it turned out that the drive
was just warn out. I had the option of returning the drive to be
reconditioned or buy a new drive. I opted to buy a new 4x6 Panasonic
drive. As soon as I installed the new drive, it worked perfectly.
I wish I had better news for you, I know these drives are not cheap.
That is my experience.
