First, figure out what you will be doing with the laptop.  If you will
only be using it for note-taking and word processing, take a look at a
second-hand 286.  Even that should be fast enough to keep up with the
swiftest typist.

If you need to run big spreadsheets or fancy applications - especially
graphics or games, you will pay much more for the privilege.  The risk
of loss by theft also goes up.  How much are you prepared to pay for
repairs if you fumble it at the top of the stairs?
