Dear Listmates:

Thought I'd pass along two recent news items in Vancouver, BC

1. Pizza Pops issued a product warning that their product contained soy
protein and this was "inadvertantly" left off the packaging. I saw this
broadcast on one of Vancouver's most popular local TV station's dinner-time
news show.

2. also yesterday, the Vancouver Sun newspaper published a story that The
Heart & Stroke Foundation, in partnership with several Canadian and U.S.
manufacturers will be providing new labelling on certain products. The
labels will have the words "Health Check" and will contain nutritional
information to help consumers make healthy choices.

When the symbol - a check mark inside a circle - is on a product it will
mean that the product's nutritional information has been reviewed by the
foundation and meets established criteria. The foundation's adviser, Dr.
Louis Gagnon is quoted:

"Research has shown us that consumers would support a simple system to help
them interpret information on food labels."

He is then quoted saying: the Canadian federal government is currently
studying nutritional labelling, but no date for implementation has been
given. Food manufacturers aren't legislated to provide nutritional
labelling. It's voluntary.

Every product involved in the program will have an explanatory message, a
nutrition panel and an on-package symbol.

So, looks like perhaps soy protein is worthy of a health warning & that
others are trying to get some simple labelling in place.
