This is debatable, I think. Cordain discusses this on PALEODIET. The idea
is that although fat may lower the glycemic index of carb foods, the
combination can actually create a hyperinsulemic response. Don't ask me
how. He also contends that the combination of carbs and fat is not
representative of a typical meal during the paleolithic. Proteins and fats
were eaten together after a kill, to the temporary exclusion of the less
energy-dense plant foods, which were generally eaten as they were gathered
on the trail. I am actually 'on the fence' when it comes to this issue, but
I generally try to eat the higher carb items on their own (between large
meat-based meals and without nuts or other fatty things). However, when I
do happen to have a big bowl of cherries or something with a meal, it
doesn't cause me any discomfort.
