Go ahead, eat like a caveman.
No, don't toss out your fork and napkin. But consider what some experts are
saying: We can learn a lot about healthful eating from our early ancestors.
Some proponents suggest we can combat modern ills -- cancer, heart disease,
diabetes and obesity -- by mimicking what Paleolithic hunter-gatherers ate:
a diet high in lean protein, fiber, fruits and vegetables and low in
saturated fat and sodium.
In genetic terms we are practically identical to our ancestors of 40,000
years ago. But we have "outwitted evolution," said Dr. Ronald Citron, a
cancer specialist in Los Angeles who has devised a dietary plan, complete
with recipes, based on what Cro-Magnon Man ate.
"We have two evolutionary lines," said Citron. "One is our biologic
evolution, which has not changed (since modern man emerged), and the other
is our cultural evolution, which has fast-forwarded everything and has
presented our bodies with things they have never been exposed to before.
"We can't adapt, we can't make the changes that are necessary because
biology moves at a very glacial pace and can't catch up to what we are doing
to ourselves."
