  I'm not positive about this particular model, but one key
difference between impact printers like this, and laser or inkjet
printers, is the ability to print to multi-part ("carbon copy")
forms.
  There should be a "forms thickness" lever at one end of the
carriage, with 3-5 positions.  It will likely have been easiest to
install the cartridge with this lever in its "thickest" position, and
adjusting it should bring the head a little closer to the platen.
