EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
HISTORIC ITHACA AND TOMPKINS COUNTY
JOB DESCRIPTION

Historic Ithaca, a private, not-for-profit agency serving Ithaca and
Tompkins County, is dedicated to promoting the understanding and
preservation of the built environment. It sponsors publications,
conferences and tours focused on architectural heritage, and supplies
technical consultation and support to owners of historic buildings. The
New York State "Ithaca Bill", which provides property tax incentives for
renovation of historic properties, was written by Historic Ithaca. The
organization, one of the strongest and oldest historic preservation
organizations in the state, is well known for buying and renovating a
large Greek Revival hotel, the Clinton House. This building helps to
support the organization, which also owns the West Dryden Community
Center, built as a church in 1832 in what is still a rural area, and the
State Theatre, an "atmospheric" movie/vaudeville house built in 1928,
which now awaits renovation. Historic Ithaca currently has over 500
individual and business members.

With support from the Board of Directors and staff, the executive
director is responsible for:

Community Outreach, Membership Development and Fundraising

* Building cooperative relationships with the city and county and with
appropriate groups and organizations.
* Assisting with annual campaign and other fundraising events.
* Writing grants.
* Enhancing members' and volunteers' participation in organization
activities.

Corporate Administration and Management

* Supervising and motivating staff, currently 3 full-time and 1
part-time (Director of Preservations Services, Office Manager,
Receptionist, part-time Maintenance).
* Assisting the board in developing goals, work plans, strategies, and
appropriate guidelines to carry out its duties and responsibilities.
* Developing an annual budget ($350,000) and work plan to be approved by
the executive committee and board.
* Together with the treasurer, managing the financial assets of the
organization.
* Hiring, evaluating, and if necessary, firing staff. Hiring outside
consultants as necessary.

Clinton House Management

* This includes negotiating new and renewed lease agreements, tenant
relations, maintenance, custodial issues, conservation and capital
improvements. This function is carried out in conjunction with the
architectural conservator and maintenance person, and selected board
members.

Program Development

* Advocacy: Representing Historic Ithaca, along with staff and board
members, in providing leadership to protect architecturally or
aesthetically significant properties and neighborhoods.

* Education: Developing new programming (i.e. publications, lectures,
conferences, etc.) to promote interest in and knowledge about
architecture, preservation, and environmental enhancement. Supervising
the implementation of ongoing programming, such as the Old House Fair, a
quarterly newsletter, an annual report, and other grant-related
projects.

* Developing programs that demonstrate exemplary preservation standards
to the community, such as annual preservation awards.

Qualifications Sought

Historic Ithaca is interested in hiring a person who has strong grant
writing and public relations experience. Academic training is not
necessary, but the applicant should have a background in and a strong
commitment to historic preservation, as well as knowledge of arts
organizations in general. The salary for this full-time position is
$33,000 to $38,000, knowledge with qualifications. A benefits package is
also available.

Send resumes to Jeffrey Janowsky, 121 E. Seneca St., Ithaca NY 14850.
We will be accepting resumes until July 15, 1999.
