Bill:

Check to see if the Stacks=9,256 statement is
in your CONFIG.SYS.

If it isn't, add it (after the last line).

If it is, then increase the number of stacks by 50%
until the problem goes away.  You can always back
the number of stack back down incrementally, to
save RAM.

Also, verify CONFIG.SYS contains:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE noems
DOS=HIGH,UMB

When you have multiple IRQ events, the system may
run out of stacks. Tell your mother not to use the
keyboard or move the mouse if the system seems to
be slowing down prior to a lockup. That poor 386DX
has to service all those interrupts before it can move
on to other things.
