  It was a few years ago, and I might not be remembering this correctly BUT

We had an old (new at the time) 286 Laptop Toshiba that had the 9pin out
put for video. We made up the cable for driving a VGA monitor. Plugged into
the connector.
To get it to work I believe on the keyboard someplace was FN for function
on the bottom edge of one of the center keys in the keyboard. Anyway by
holding down the Function key in combination with depressing the F10 key we
could toggle from the Orange plasma screen to the VGA screen. We also had
some analyzer type software that could somewhat control limited color.
