POWER THROUGH KNOWLEDGE Celebrating Human Diversity
POWER THROUGH KNOWLEDGE
Celebrating
Human Diversity
Knowledge and power are essential to advancing the civil rights of people
with disabilities. In Pennsylvania, the Independent Living and Disability
Rights Movements combine to form a strong united voice, a powerful
expression of our desire to control our lives. POWER THROUGH KNOWLEDGE,
the third statewide conference on Independent Living, will include
workshops, general sessions featuring disability leaders, and working
sessions called Advocacy Forums. Your role will be to participate
actively within the topic area you choose, and develop recommendations to
be incorporated into the Statewide Strategic Advocacy Plan. This
conference is your chance to communicate experiences, ideas, and concerns
to policy makers in Pennsylvania, and make a significant contribution to
the future of disability policy in PA. POWER THROUGH KNOWLEDGE
Celebrating Human Diversity, was chosen as this yearÕs theme, because we
believe that respect for diversity and recognition of individual talents
bring energy, power, and success to people across Pennsylvania. The
conference will celebrate diversity throughout the four day program.
Conference registrations are being accepted on a first-come, first-served
basis, so fill out your application now!! Be sure to identify the topic
area of your choice, the one that most interests you, and check the
workshops you wish to attend. List a first, second and third choice for
all workshops and the advocacy forum topic. Due to space limitations, you
may not get the choice you would prefer. Advocacy Forums: These forums
will be your opportunity to participate in designing the PA Strategic
Advocacy Plan. Choose from among a menu of forum topics and attend the
forum that is most important to you. for those who donÕt wish to
participate in a topic listed, design your own forum in Òopen spaceÓ.
Workshops: These are informative sessions, presented by people who are
familiar with the subject, have knowledge and experience, and have
state-of-the-art details to share with the audience.
Speakers Shafik Asante is recognized nationally and internationally as a
dynamic and effective presenter and workshop facilitator. He is a
consistent human rights advocate with a strong voice, and advocates for
people with Òunrecognized abilitiesÓ and all people who have been locked
out from participating in society in a full way. His writing and teaching
focus on leadership for all, community organizing, diversity, and alliance
building.
