I just went through this with a system I set up for a family member. Had me
pulling what's left of my hair out too. If the WD is your ONLY hard drive, do
you possibly have it set to the "master" position? If it is, and you do, I can
tell you that this is the problem. I can't explain why, but if you take the
jumper off of the drive, thereby setting it to be the only HD present, it will
boot just fine. The WD does not like being set to master if it is the only
drive present.
