ElectroStatic Discharge. That cute little spark you get when you
shuffle across the rug and then zap your friend can be utterly fatal to
microelectronic components -- even at levels that won't cause a spark
you'd notice.
There are a variety of measures (that's the beginning of a list,
after the paren) that can be taken to reduce the risk of accidentally
destroying a component. Most modern components tend to be less
vulnerable than 20 years ago, and so most people can get by without
taking drastic precautions.
