The computer that I have the joy of working on this week, is a
NEC Ready 9617.
It came with Windows 95, on a 1.6 hard drive. the owner has since
upgraded to windows 98.
The hard drive has died, and the Ontrack software utility reported
that the data on it is unrecoverable but he has a 5gig drive that
he wants installed anyway.
I hooked up the 5g drive, fdisked it using fat 32 (the customer
had specifically requested this) and Installed Windows 98. It
doesn't even see the modem, the sound doesn't work, and there is a
hardware conflict with an "Unknown Device".
I figured that restoring from the NEC CD to windows 95, and then
upgrading to 98 would fix this problem, and it did, all the
hardware now works, but the restore CD gives me no options. It
runs fdisk (using fat 16), formats the drive and then installs all
the programs. This is unacceptable since only 2/5ths of the drive
is being used.
The only way around this that I can see, is to copy the contents
of the entire drive to a spare hard drive, fdisk to set up the 5G
drive with fat32, format it and then copy all the files back to
the drive.
Can anyone think of a better way?

Also, I have tried three PCI modems, three different brands, in
this computer, as soon as I put it in the slot, the computer is
dead, no signal to the video, no post, nothing but fans. Take it
out, and the computer is fine. A new ISA modem works fine though.
I'm assuming that the PCI on the motherboard is to blame. Is this
common?
