This may be precisely the reason why your friend recommended to start slowly.
Some time after I started my low carb diet I decided that I was going to take
some antiyeast supplements to make sure I didn't have any yeast problems.
I took a few - caprilic acid, citrus seed extract, garlic, and a few others.
Took decent dozes too. Got sick as a dog for about a day (had to skip the
new years festivities because of this). As near as I can figure this
happened because all this stuff I took was indeed very effective and killed
off yeast. Which resulted in yeast toxins being released in fairly large
quantities which made me sick. Never had that kind of reaction to these
supplements again, but then I don't think I have ever had yeast problem
since then (being on a rather strick low carb diet most of the time).

The other reason is that coconut oil is rich in medium chain triglycerides,
which might irritate stomach in some people (caprilyc acid is a MCT). So one
may start a bit slow if unsure of the reaction.
