A bad reaction to milk is normally either an intolerance - to lactose - or
an allergy - to milk's proteins -.

Lactose is a sugar, milk's sugar. Casein, Lactoalbumin and Lactoglobulin
are the three main proteins in milk. The most comon allergy is to casein,
but it's possible to be allergic to all three, and they can be tested
separatedly (my son Nikolas' tested positive to all three). In any case
I would not give any milk product to anyone allergic to any of the three
proteins, as it is very easy that the product contains little amounts
of the offending protein.
