Hi Trevor
Quickly, sounds like a cdrom driver in low memory or
your mscdex.exe command in autoexec.bat is using
the /M:10 switch to set aside buffers in memory. This
is a nice feature for a 2 speed but takes up memory.
2x and 1x cdrom's were notorious for big device drivers,
especially if you are SCSI and you have to load the SCSI
card driver as well. Try memmaker or get a new cdrom.

Conventional Memory stuck at 554k... Tried as much as possible to increase
this with device high statements in config.sys etc...
Anybody any suggestions?
