Hi Listers,

Please pass this announcement to friends and colleagues in the New York City
area.

Eddie Montanez

Dear Consumer/Advocate,
On September 11, 2001, life as we knew it changed forever. As a result of
those horrific events most of us were left with feelings that range from
anger to inconsolable grief to helplessness, with questions like "How do I,
as a person with a disability, manage in this time of crisis?" and "What
support systems are in place to address my immediate needs?"
After receiving many calls regarding why this happened and how to cope with
transportation arrangements and other disability related services, we
realized that KNOWLEDGE = POWER and one way to empower the community of
people with disabilities is to sponsor a conference to address those needs
and more. We would like to invite you to a conference, "Emergency
Preparedness for People with Disabilities: What you need to know". Please
join us at the conference location most convenient to you.

Manhattan Location:
Date: Wednesday, January 16, 2002 From: 9:00am until 4:30pm
Manhattan Veterans Administration Medical Center
427 E. 23rd Street

Bronx Location:
Date: Wednesday, January 30, 2002 From: 9:00am until 4:30pm
Bronx Veterans Administration Medical Center
130 W. Kingsbridge Road

There will be representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(F.E.M.A), the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management Services, the Fire
Department of New York, the New York Police Department, Access - A- Ride;
experts in the field of mental health and public health, and other invited
guest speakers.

Breakfast and lunch will be served and transportation provided upon
availability of funding. The conference is totally accessible including ASL
interpreters, assistive listening devices and alternative media. We are
planning a Brooklyn conference also; details to be announced.

To reserve your space at one of the conference locations please call
212-584-2500 ext 530 or for the hearing impaired TTY 212-584-2550 or e-mail
