Department of Human Services, Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired

Salary:
$11.50 per hour N14

Position Purpose:
This position teaches, trains, and assesses computer skills for adults who
are blind or visually impaired; evaluates individual client's knowledge and
functional abilities to operate computer hardware and software; provides
instruction to individuals and small groups in use of adaptive computer
equipment;
plans lessons to include problem solving skills for daily computer use;
provides direct non-sighted and low vision methods of using a computer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
standard computer hardware, software, and internet access;
adaptive computer equipment including scanners, synthesized speech, braille,
large print, and other adaptive software used by individuals who are blind
or visually impaired;
medical disabilities, various eye diseases, and how disabilities affect an
individual's ability to function;
cultural, economical, social, and psychological factors that influence
behavior;
"Skills of Blindness".

Skill and Ability to:
train clients to navigate a keyboard without using mouse control;
assess clients' learning styles, and determine what teaching methods will
work best to help students achieve independent use of a computer;
identify, develop, and utilize community resources available to individuals
and families;
evaluate each client's functioning and determine what adaptive equipment can
best meet his or her needs;
maintain case records and documentation, prepare reports, and compose
correspondence;
establish effective working relationships with clients, their families,
other public, and private agencies;
monitor clients' progress in training, and utilize discovery learning to
help increase clients' self confidence and problem-solving abilities;
organize time and resources;
communicate, make public speaking appearances, and participate in community
education and public relations;
maintain professional objectivity and work with diverse individuals and
consumer groups;
provide consultation to other staff and agencies to help meet the computer
needs of clients statewide;
evaluate and teach a wide range of clients with different ability levels;
work closely with other members of a team.
