Create high-tech educational and training environments in low-income housing
projects!
Join a 14-member VISTA team working across the country!

AmeriCorps*VISTA Members will be an integral part of the Youth Policy
Institute's Community Building and EmpowerNET strategy in 7 communities
nationwide: Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, Memphis,
Louisville, and Prince George's County, Maryland.  VISTA Members will assist
the Youth Policy Institute (YPI) in dealing with critical community issues
like sustainability, "digital divide," and self-sufficiency.  VISTA Members
will also empower low-income residents to shape the futures of their own
communities.

The 7 sites are funded by the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education.
These
grants will assist thousands of participants with welfare-to-work and
technology services.  VISTA Members will work as Community Builders at each
site.  VISTA Community Builders will work closely with on-site
welfare-to-work professional staff, faculty and students from a local
university, and national YPI staff.  Community Builders will directly assist
residents of the targeted low-income housing projects and neighborhoods in
all aspects of individual, family, and community empowerment.  Community
Builders will also seek additional funding sources for the long-term
sustainability of their work in the community.
    VISTA Community Builders will:
·   Establish partnerships with community-based and governmental agencies
·   Manage a community technology center
·   Organize computer and technology classes
·   Conduct community-based research in partnership with a local university
·   Facilitate community planning and direct democracy
·   Establish a Community Advisory Committee composed of residents and local
service providers
·   Help run the EmpowerNET, an innovative community Website (see
www.tkcnetwork.com/empowernet, click on Pacoima for prototype)
·   Develop relationships with local employers and businesses

The Youth Policy Institute (YPI) national staff in Los Angeles, Washington,
DC, and New York City will train and support the 14 VISTA Community
Builders.
 YPI was founded in 1979 by David Hackett, a former close aide to John and
Robert Kennedy.  YPI's mission is to foster community building and
neighborhood empowerment for lower-income and minority communities, with the
goal of attaining social and economic justice.

VISTA Members will be starting in January 2001 for a one-year term.  Members
will receive a living stipend, a comprehensive benefits package, and an
educational award at the completion of their year of service.  Relocation
expenses may also be covered.  All ages are encouraged to apply.  Please
